Archipelago 04:00
In the archipelago Fashioned of electrical bones Starlings overcome by trees Carry on DOA answering machines. Now I feel dead on my feet Beneath my cohorts' capering beaks On a carved barge genuflecting To the false walls grown over with confetti. We'll hum along like a couple of monks.

Deerskin 03:29
See deerskin on the wall Comforting me, Figure they don't bleed. Build a set of skins From polymer and paint it up, Then create a line of tees. See it take off, I'm just glad to spare a few ungulates. Fly my flag across a map: Spotted, dry clean, Ceaseless machine stream. A cargo cult sprung From color codes and free trading Either and or point me East. "Eli Takes on Supply and Demand," get a load of this. I don't think I've got Any earthly idea Who pays my phone bills When I reach the end. Let's rack up points for them.

Ossuary 04:16
Sword of Damocles, clip me. I'm tired of being scared to death That what comes next won't be finishing. "How to Live Sanctimoniously"; I'm printed on the inside flap, Facing a dedication that reads: "I disown this ossuary." Honey what could be better than a brief sojourn somewhere that's cold? Somewhere climate-controlled? And then you come home. How Ventilated bodies quell grief I can only guess but my mind Goes to force immediately. Staging area, I'm leaning; The sheet was thinking like a ghost And I, like one loose, fled the building. I disown this ossuary. Honey what could be better than a brief sojourn somewhere that's cold? Somewhere climate-controlled? And then you come home.

People stay inside more And watch me from the frames of their doors. Lilypads are empty, Ponds are cold, opaque; They join the falling leaves in their display. What a beautiful shade of yellow That bounces right off of your smile. You should wear that color more often, My love.

Sitting in my car at my job outside of town; It's been a few months since I've seen you. The breeze through my cracked window reminds me of St. Louis. It's often that I'm here pushing bags across the line That I run a gloved hand over how lonely And quiet I am inside this sterile suit every morning. What's to find by driving 800 miles? The life I drove here for is an elephant on a pier, Any sculptor will say to chisel everything That doesn't look quite like what you're witnessing. What's to find by driving 800 miles? Somewhere to lay this marble down. Where better for an ass than a one-horse town? So I'm leaving now.

Evergreen 03:07
Evergreen: A promise kept but so hard to nail down. If I were to take a bus I think I'd reach it about an hour Before my end. Running clean Through the air the smoke stack breathes okay. If I were to sit awhile and watch the rippling sky make way For itself I'd yawn. Something tells us to invert our sorrow; Say we've had it worse. Something tells us that we're bankrupt, to skip town. Something holds us back From walking into traffic, But I've no means to tell you what. One more scene; See the seat shift under a pillar of companies From 12th and Powell all the way down to 12th and South Broadway But this has been better-done. Something tells us to invert our sorrow; Say we've had it worse. Something tells us that we're bankrupt, to skip town. Something holds us back From walking into traffic, But I've no means to tell you what. Something tells me not to keep things static.

Out with it! You can keep the rest for yourself, But I would love to hear what's under your breath. You've witnessed a world dragged out of health, And that's only in the footprints you leave on the rest. Find some room and make it sing to you, Play a song that makes you feel better, My friend. Find some room and make it sing to you, Play a song that makes it seem better, My friend, down to us all.

about

'And Marla Burns' is a collaborative album with a kaleidoscopic selection of genre-influences. I hope you're able to enjoy something a little strange and a little dense, despite the relatively brief run-time.

Thank you to all of my friends who inspired and collaborated with me across these 10 tracks.

In memory of Mikhail Kijauskas.
